So goes the greeting we use everyday as we walk the streets of Mindelo. “Good day, are you doing well? It always brings a smile and generally a response of “bem” or good. We try a put forth a friendly smile to everyone, as by now most of the town knows there is an American couple living here, who speak terrible Portuguese. Everyone though seems friendly, except many of the Chinese shop owners. They sit behind their counters and frown at all the customers. It takes a concerted effort to get them to smile, but once you break the ice they are friendly folk. Although when I say” Jo san” hello in Cantonese, they just look at you. Then I try “Ne how ma” hello in Mandarin (please excuse the smelling of my Chinese words), again no response, so I say it slower and they kind of oh “Ne how ma”! But they do respond to, Tchau, goodbye in Portuguese. We seem to need something every day or so and so we visit all the little shops, which generally are owned by Chinese.
This week we visited the other 2 branches on Sunday. Sister Waller played the piano in both as they have no music person. They were poorly attended as far as numbers go, around 65 people in each, but each branch has well over 400 members. So there is lots of reactivation work to do. Monday evening we hopped on the bus and went to President Tavares home for FHE. He was supposed to meet us at the bus stop so we would know where to get off at, but he was late. This is a habit around here. Everything is on Cabo Verdian time, which is always late except for closing the door for lunch. Anyway we ended up passing his place and going allthe way back to town. There we caugth a taxi and had Pres. Tavares give directions over the phone. we made it and had a nice FHE with 4 investigators.
In our last newsletter I put a picture of a US Coast Guard Cutter in the harbor. Today as we were downtown we saw a US Navy Destroyer in port. I quess Mindelo is a stopping point for Atlantic crossings on the way to the Persian Gulf.
We are still having problems with the internet, it is quite slow during the day, but seems to speed up a bit in the evening. We have though enjoyed your response to the Blogspot. It seems to be a nice way to transmit information with pictures.
We are busy preparing for this coming weekend; we have both Zone conference and District Conference. Elder Vinas of the 1st Quorum of Seventy (counselor in the Area Presidency) will be here for all the meetings. Looks like I have to give 2 talks, plus help with arrangements for refreshments for the Zone Conference, which basically means lots of cookies and punch.
Sister Waller now has 3 students in her piano class, and after Conference that number could jump as high as 6. That will be nice to keep her busy. Although just keeping the house clean; going with the Elders and Sisters; food on the table; giving blessings, and in general sorting through mission problems, keeps us busy most days.
